My Lesson from Powerlifting

After I finished my deadlift

Last year, I competed for the first time in a Powerlifting Competition with some persuasive talk from my buddy Drew Powell. I trained for this competition for about 8 weeks and surprised myself with my performance on the squat, bench and deadlift. I hit all Personal Records and I had a blast in the process. I love the Powerlifting community because of the friendly competition and the comradery amongst the lifters. After the competition, I vowed to come back next year, bigger, better and pushing much more weight

Fast forward one year later, I had an opportunity to compete last weekend to test my strength and hard work. Once again, I hit a personal record on all my lifts. I have to thank my buddy Andrew Powell for the motivation and my trainer Joe Todd for getting me ready for the competition.

As I look back at my training regiment throughout the year, I’ve found it was easy for me to accomplish my goals. The reason was because I’ve possessed a vital key to success. What is the key I’m referring to? It’s the one factor that kept Michael Jordan engaged in basketball. It is a factor that made Tom Brady a top Quarterback in the NFL. This vital key to success I’m referring to is OBSESSION.

I’ve developed an obsession with the sport of powerlift after my first competition. My obsession turned into a passion and developed a burning desire to be a fierce competitor every year. This obsession has kept me going through days I didn’t feel like stepping inside a gym. Believe me, there have been many occasions where I’ve been lacking motivation. I would rather sit on my couch, eat a pizza and watch a movie. However, I had a goal and I wanted to accomplish it. So, I stayed on track and kept pushing. As Jimmy Johnson stated, “The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.”

Here are my (3) three main reasons to become obsessed with your goals

  • Make you committed to achieving your goals

  • Help generate better ideas

  • Give you a better chance of accomplishing your goals

Have you ever been obsessed with a goal? Did your obsession make it easier for you to accomplish your goal? Leave me a comment below or on my social media site, Facebook or Twitter and let me know about your obsession with your goal.
