I had a great conversation with my best friend about the power of planning. Benjamin Franklin said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” I truly believe if you want to get ahead, you should establish a plan and work to conquer it.
At the beginning of each year, I establish a plan for my Real Estate Investment Business. At the end of December, I usually look at my year-end performance and validate it against my goals. And If I’m off the mark with my goals, I simply make minor adjustments and recreate goals for the upcoming year. I never dwell on the past. I just learn from it and move forward into the future.
As I was driving to my men’s group this morning, I had an epiphany about the importance of being here in the moment and planning for the future. I realized to reach success, you should treat your life like driving a car.
Why driving a car? That sounds silly, right?
Automobile manufactures placed a windshield and rear view mirror in our vehicles for a reason. Think about how you use these two items when you’re driving. Most of us use our rear-view mirror to check traffic and if it’s safe to switch lanes. In other words, we use our rear view occasionally by looking back at what is behind and coming towards us.
Now let’s reflect on your windshield. It’s the biggest window we have in our car and we use it to navigate the vehicle through traffic and to plan our next turn on our route to our destination. We utilize the windshield roughly 99.9% of the time while driving. And if not, we are bound to crash.
Why should you plan?
If you want to be successful you must stay focus on the present and plan for the future. Just like driving a car, it’s ok to take a short glance in the rear-view mirror but if you keep your eyes focus behind too long, you will crash. Ralph Marston said, “Your destiny is to fulfill those things upon which you focus most intently. So, choose to keep your focus on that which is truly magnificent, beautiful, uplifting and joyful. Your life is always moving toward something.”
Take Away
Don't look back. Stay in the now and plan for the future. You must dig deep and go for your goals. The past cannot be changed. The future is in your power. Love life!
