Do you have a passion to create a product and want to get it in the marketplace? Do you have a great business idea but feel like it’s impossible to do?
You would be surprised by the number of people I come across that have a passion for business. These individuals are ordinary people with a 9 to 5 job and every day they work hard to put food on the table for their families. Deep down, they want to be entrepreneurs. They see themselves calling their own shots by working for themselves. And if not in a full-time capacity; by starting a side hustle to create an additional income. The spirit of entrepreneurship is running through their blood.
My normal conversation with them usually goes like this.
Me: Why do you want to start a business?
Them: I want to be my own boss
Me: When are you planning to start?
Them: Well… Maybe in a couple years because I need to save up or maybe when I retire and have more time.
In my experience, 9 out of 10 times I get the same response to these questions. Half of these inspiring entrepreneurs say they want to start a business when they save enough money. The other half says they don’t have time to start. I simply explain these are excuses and if they want to be successful you must go for it. There’s no better time than now.
Why should I start my business now?
My mom used to tell me, “Mike, there’s no better time than today because tomorrow isn't promised.” I take these wise words from my mother to heart. But, she’s 100% right with this advice. Tomorrow isn’t promised. I truly believe if you want something bad enough, you will find a way to make it happen. If you don’t have enough funds to start your dream business, maybe you can start on a smaller scale. For example; If you have a passion for baking and your dream is to open a bakery, maybe it’s too expensive to open your shop today on the busiest part of town. But what is stopping you from turning your kitchen into a bakery and selling your products online through your website or Facebook? Do you need a fancy storefront to sell baked goods? I think not. All you need are baked goods. It’s that simple.
Fulfill your purpose – Being an entrepreneur is probably the hardest job ever. You are 100% responsible for your future and if you have employees, you are responsible for them too. I don’t think many people want to take that burden unless it’s their calling. If you are following your purpose in life, you will love every minute of it. You will be fulfilled and full of joy.
Bring a great experience to others (People will love your product) - About once a month I stop by this Thai restaurant close to work. A husband and wife team runs the business and they always greet me kindly when I enter their restaurant. I go there so much that they already know my order for lunch. Every time I eat there, I always pay compliments to the husband (the cook) for the delicious meal. I can see the joy that comes upon their faces from me loving the meal.
This is why entrepreneurship is fun. You get to see and interact with the people who enjoy your product or service. It’s a great feeling to know the smiles on your customer's faces were brought by you.
Give back to the community – The sooner you start, the sooner you can start giving back to your community. Albert Einstein stated, “It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.” I truly believe it’s important to bless others.
Make your family proud – Your family will be proud that you worked so hard and could accomplish your dream. I’m a big believer in passing down a legacy. What drives me to be the best are my boys. I love the excitement they show for me when I share about dad’s accomplishment. To them, I’m their superhero, Superman. But the truth is I cannot do it without them. If entrepreneurship is what you are destined to conquer, make it a family event and crush it. Make your family proud!
Why wait to fulfill your dream or make that additional money for your household? Why wait for another raise, that may never come, so you can have enough money to start? Why can’t you start small and start now? I encourage you to start now and don’t put your dreams on hold. As stated by Oprah Winfrey, "The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams."
