It was a time in my life where I’ve done things for others. I would dress and talk a certain way to be accepted in a group. I even remember telling people I wanted to be a doctor or lawyer so it would sound good. When in fact, I wanted to be a fashion designer or own a clothing store because fashion was my passion and what I was into at the time. I couldn’t have been a doctor. I wasn’t interested in learning about the body, and I surely couldn’t be in the same room with someone continually sneezing or ill. So, why did I tell my friends and family these things about my future? The main reason is that I wanted to fit in and I cared what others think.

Let’s fast forward to 20 plus years later. I’ve realized the importance of being yourself and never follow the things others are doing. The saying I always tell people is that I want to be weird. Yes, you heard me.. WEIRD!! Ordinary people get and stay on a job they don’t like, buy material things to please others, or isn’t motivated to do anything significant in life. They want to fit in with the crowd and for their possessions.

Why be weird?

Being weird means, you don’t care what people think. You will quit a high paying job (after planning it out of course) in the corporate world for a lower paying job because it gives you more flexibility of spend time with your family. I knew a guy that had a high paying job as a manager at a software development company and gave it all up to be a High School teacher back in his hometown. His passion for teaching and inspiring others outweighed the fancy cars and the $100K salary he obtained through the years.

Make a commitment

Today, I want to think about the things you want to accomplish in life. Write them down and go for it. Life is short, and you shouldn’t be worried what others think. You should only focus on the things that are important to you and your family. If you want to change your career field because you’re not happy, make a plan and do it. I don’t want you to do what everyone else is doing and care what others think. I want you to be weird. Focus on yourself, your immediate family and change the world!

How do you want to be remembered? What makes you happy? What makes your family happy? Please leave your comments below.
